When the pool sees less action, it can be easy to overlook winter prep. But giving your pool a little TLC now can save you a world of hassle - and cost - when swimming season returns.
Here are some tips to get you started.
Before your pool takes its seasonal nap, give it a proper clean. Skim off fallen leaves, scrub the shell and tile lines, and don’t forget those hidden corners where debris loves to linger. Leftover gunk can stain the surface, feed algae and clog your system - best to get it sorted now.
If your pool won’t be used over winter, switch off your heat pump. For extra care, you may also want to disconnect it and drain any remaining water, especially if your area gets frosty.
If you're not actively heating your pool during the winter months, it's advisable to remove the pool cover. Since there's no need to retain heat, keeping the cover on serves little purpose and can actually lead to damage over time.
Pool chemicals - especially chlorine and other sanitisers - can gradually degrade the cover material when it's left in place for extended periods without the offsetting benefit of heat retention. This not only shortens the lifespan of the cover but may also lead to unwanted buildup or discolouration. Removing the cover when it's not needed helps preserve its condition and ensures it remains effective when it's actually required.
Your pool doesn’t need as much filtration in the cooler months. As a rule of thumb, you might reduce run time to 6 hours a day in autumn and 4 hours during winter (or as advised based on your pool size). Plus, don’t forget to backwash and rinse the filter thoroughly: it helps prevent build-up, so your water stays clear with less effort come spring.
Cold weather doesn’t mean you can skip water testing. Ensure pH, chlorine and salt levels are within range before closing up. Balanced water helps protect pool surfaces and extends the life of your equipment. If in doubt, get a professional test done - it’s worth it.
Take this time to inspect your pump, chlorinator and dosing system. Look for signs of wear, calcium build-up or leaks. A quick rinse, some preventative cleaning and draining unused components can extend their lifespan dramatically.
Even in winter, your pool needs occasional attention. Every couple of weeks, check your water levels, empty skimmer baskets and monitor your chemical balance - especially after heavy rain.
The off-season can be the best time to tackle repairs or servicing. Don’t wait until spring to discover your pump’s packed up or your chlorinator’s clogged. If you get ahead now, your pool will be in top shape when the weather turns.
